what is valued is what can be "objectively" measured.  It drives me crazy how well-meaning columnists (Kristoff, most recently) argue how important teachers are and then use as their evidence that test scores have been raised.  Those of us who are in the classroom know there's so much more to it than that--that often the tests are measuring sets of outdated skills and that even a poor teacher can "raise" test scores if the right students end up on his roster.  It is so refreshing to read this diary from an administrator who gets it!  The story told is beautiful, real and hardly reported because it's not the narrative that serves the current push to privatize schools.  Thank you, thank you, for writing it.
