My family has some similar contexts, although they'd never do the trust thing -- its the swim little fishy or die Protestant ethic, and while there are very real advantages to having a family that isn't po', they aren't in the same style.  Of course, I've thought about similar stuff (how can one not)?

One problematic aspect....at 67 your dad is still quite young.  As a counterpoint to the low taxes, we have the health care system.  If you just get old, then the costs of care will burn the money at about 8-20k a month to live decently when helpless, which is sustainable.  If you get old and sick, you can trade a lot of gold for a little time (and its a good deal, if you have the gold).  But -- it can use up a lot of gold.  So there is a very strong incentive not to touch the capital, independent of good old Anglican values, or safety for those you live: you can trade it for time and quality of life.

But generally, its like Vonnegut said: if you're of a certain class, they show you where the river of money is and how to dip your bucket in it.  There are of course values and mores that go with that class, they don't all suck, and they generally involve working like a dog :}   But yeah -- even many of my more insulated relatives are getting it, the middle class they still identify with, the America they believed in, is going south fast.

If you get  it, don't give it away.   I mean it.  Keep enough so that if you end up totally fucked, like my friend who has aggressive and progressive MS, you can have real care and as decent a life as you can buy.  Keep enough so that you can give that to someone you love.  For as long as you or they live.

      Because life is like that.
