  •  I too was a bouncer. More than once, I used those (8+ / 0-)

skills to take one of those haymakers and turn it into an embarrassing moment for the guy throwing it.  They end up on their knees, wrist bent the wrong way, begging to be let go.  I've never actually had to strike anyone, other than in sparring.
Drunks are easy.  They don't have balance, and usually do more damage to themselves than anyone else.  You just step out of the way.

I do enjoy pushing their buttons, and egging them on.  I know that's probably bad of me, but it's so much fun.  I like to see "tough guys" get red and mad.  I invite the strike, knowing it will never land.  It never seems to happen though.  Calmly standing your ground and smiling does a lot too.  Freaks them out.  Bullies are used to getting a fearful reaction.  When they don't get one, they begin to wonder.

I also had a 3rd degree belter friend that would get drunk and get his butt whupped often.  I suggested that it would probably work better if he wasn't drunk.

I never throw the first punch.  I call those that make threats out on their threat.  No follow through.  Most are blowhard cowards.  I do watch my back.

The cops at the Occupies I have been to seem to pretend they don't see me, and pick on smaller people.  That's why I stand right up front.  Want to arrest me?  Better bring a friend, cause I'll just sit down and go limp.  I have a thick skull.

My thing was to never have to get a wrist lock or arm bar going. I honestly never wanted to touch the people who came out of the place where I worked. I wore gloves, every day, and carried several pairs of disposables just in case.

You're right about drunks being easy, but I always considered it a failure if I had to engage. I liked cultivating the mystique, I liked using my natural size and closed face instead of my open palm. I hated having to back up the implied threat.

Extra kudos to you for being involved in OWS!
