  •  I've seen Gary Johnson on TV a couple of times (2+ / 0-)

He doesn't have a strong television presence, that's for sure.  The couple of times I've seen him, he had trouble stringing complete sentences together.

I do agree that the legacy media will take a closer look at Rmoney's religion, and have been saying all along that the magic underwear is a complete deal breaker in the fringe fundie wing of the GOP.  They'd hold their nose and vote for a Catholic, but not a Mormon cultist.

We're resigned to our collective fate because we've been conditioned to believe that this is as good as it gets.

    •  Especially if the media (4+ / 0-)

takes a look at some of the, shall we say, out of the mainstream beliefs of traditional Mormonism that the modern LDS church has swept under the rug in the interest of being accepted as just another branch of Christianity. Like the Adam/God doctrine (God was a man who became exalted and fathered spirt children with a Heavenly Wife to create the souls of humanity), exaltation (you can become a god of your own planet one day), Mormon theocracy prophecies (republic hanging by a thread, etc), not to mention baptisms for the dead (including Holocaust victims) and the LDS church's rather checkered past on race relations.

look at Mormonism very critically, that they will "play nice".

I would love to see on national TV some of the world's most noted Egyptologists take apart Joseph Smith's claims about the "Book of Abraham" but I don't think the corporate media is up to it.

will never want to be seen as attacking a religion. Hell, they even act like scientology is a legitimate religion.

          •  Give Scientology ~100 more years. (0+ / 0-)

It's not inherently crazier than any other religion, it just needs a bit more time to seep into the background until it reaches the point where people go, "Oh, you're a Scientologist? That's nice."

Once DC-10s and eMeters are seen as old-timey, it'll lose some of the initial "WTF" factor. I'd say, hmm... 50 more years at least. If their membership holds out that long and/or Interpol doesn't just arrest the lot of SeaOrg for nine kinds of human rights violations. Man I'd like to see Freewinds raided by police.

            •  The thing with Scientology (0+ / 0-)

Is that its clearly a money making scheme. The more you pay the closer you get to enlightenment, and they don't really try to hide that. The average Joe on the street isn't going to get his thetons read and stick with Scientology long term. Hollywood likes it because it tells famous people that they are rich and loved becaue they deserve to be rich and loved.

          •  is there such a thing as "legitimate religion"? (0+ / 0-)

the two words seem to be mutually exclusive to me

To be a Republican, you have to believe that our economic problems are caused by the poor having too much money and the rich not having enough.

        •  I agree. (0+ / 0-)

The approach of the msm now is if it's got a Repub label on it, present it neutrally no matter how insanely ridiculous it is.  Plus the mormons have a lot of money and everyone bows down to that nowadays.
