  •  Definitely (13+ / 0-)

It's about points of leverage: what can have the largest impact for the least cost.

Painting roofs white is a good step.  Two that might have an even larger impact are massive investment in family planning / contraception and in vegetarianism.

As I've written about a lot, peak oil is another major reason why we need to immediately begin a major energy shift away from fossil fuels (oil in particular), and to do that we need massive investment in public transit and small-scale intensive organic agriculture.

    •  We also need a war on extravagant fossil fuel (7+ / 0-)

dependent land use practices, such as lawn-centric landscapes that depend on the Haber-Bosch process for the synthetic fertilizer and oil to produce and run the machinery that runs over these monocultures 25 to 30 times a year. The shallow roots of turf also do a poor job of carbon storage and metering the runoff from increasingly flashy rain events.

We also have to modify our lives to reduce wasteful energy intensive activities. Shifting to more telecommuting and mandating a 4-day work week would be a good start.
