I notice a lot more of them are made out of metal now, including the new one I am typing on now.

Should be easier to recycle/reuse the materials at the end of the product life, as well as hold up longer.

Waste is one of the reasons we are having problems with global warming, in addition to the burning of millions of years of fossils.

    •  also that the computers are not designed to last. (9+ / 0-)

The typical replacement cycle for a laptop is about 4 years.  The typical replacement cycle for a cellphone is 18 months.

Compare to the replacement cycle of Bell telephones, which was 40 years.

Bottom line is, we could have computer equipment that's built like Bell telephones.  The technology has reached an effective plateau to where further improvements have no effect on the user or the stuff that the system is being used for.  At this point the manufacturers could compete on ruggedness and reliability.  If they wanted to.

And they might, if the buying public demanded it.
