    This past season and last year the colors were muddied.
    This year I think there was a lack of rain, leaves got dried out and  then Irene hit.  Right now,  in north central Vermont we have very little snow and in fact lots of ice from freezing rain recently.
    As far as bright leaf color, some of this is localized - you can sometimes have better color in the White Mountain National Forest in NH and in the  Vt Greens as well.
    ColoTim, you can check VT and NH state websites starting in mid-Sept. for color peak predictions. A loop starting in Boston, heading to western MA., up to and then across VT, NH  and over to the Maine coast and back to Boston is a good way to go. There's a lot to see in sweet New England. Let's hope the maple trees can survive along with a whole lot of other things.
