I'm surprised it's not significantly higher.

Ronald Reagan was re-elected in California in part because he got tough with demonstrators.

You are losing the public relations battle, and you are losing the community. The numbers in the African American Community are stunning.

The FTP meme is so damaging that Karl Rove could not have done better.

What OWS is doing here isn't working. I don't know your situation, and I would not presume to advise you.

But the current tactics will wind up marginalizing this movement. and threaten it nationally.

"Do you support? Or oppose the movement's goal of taking over vacant buildings to use as the movement's headquarters?"

Did OO have a goal to use vacant buildings as headquarters? My understanding of vacant building use with OO has been that they wanted to protest the buildings' vacancies and foreclosures, and also that in some cases, individuals being foreclosed wanted them occupied.

Where is this "to use as the movement's headquarters" stuff coming from? Or did I just miss something here?

Not "buildings" but "building". The intent was to take over a vacant building and use it as a community center.

There is also the general protest against buildings sitting vacant (especially public buildings) when there are homeless on the streets, yes.

And there are also protests against foreclosures, yes.

Yeah, I did miss that. Unsure how... work probably, if it was recent. People are so tetchy about private or bank-owned property. But seriously, that couple talking lit me up the other day. So there is support.

Also, that poll, out of SF, isn't nearly as bad as one would suspect. But they aren't really living in Oakland. I would think they'd have done a poll of folks in Oakland proper.

Back to work for me again over here. Kind of raining. Stay dry.

Hippiephobia has been a substantial factor in American politics since the 60s. It's an irrational fear of the other, taking over from racism the distortion that gets people to vote against their own interest.

Among centrists, there hs been a laziness to judge the boundaries of political debate by putting Obama on the left. Along comes the Occupy movement, and there is a much more accurate left for the triangulators to angulate against. I don't think Obama's Osawatomie speech would have been possible if it hadn't been for the Occupiers.

That is a threat to the power structure. We've seen that the Democratic Party has been pursuing the center for 36 years, and the center is as exactly halfway between the two parties as it was when Carter was elected. Along comes the Occupy movement, exposing the reality of a left that the system has thus far ignored, and the powers are scared. They need to bring back hippiephobia. Therefore, they're trying to portray the Occupiers as hippies, so that people won't blame the police for misusing a tear gas grenade launcher, but the vet who got in the way of an improperly launched canister.
