but they were sanctioned by their professional organizations, and hundreds of their colleagues stepped up and spoke out to say what they were doing was wrong. If they had ever gone to court, the prosecution would have had no trouble at all coming up with expert witnesses to testify that the torture-enablers' actions were not accepted clinical procedure and that enabling torture is a serious breach of professional ethics.

Cops won't do that. It's a rare (usually retired) cop who will speak up about police abuse at all. The FOP never will, and as for getting cops to testify against each other in court? Ha!

People might cite the dangers of policing and how they shape police culture. Those people need to have a good hard look at the U.S. military. Do soldiers, Sailors, airmen and Marines protect each other? Sure. Sometimes they cover up some pretty awful stuff. But not everything, and not all of them. The military sends servicemembers to prison every day. Prison. Not just for murder, but for stuff like DUI, simple assault, reckless driving. And they do so in court proceedings comprised entirely of military servicemembers, from the defendant and witnesses on up to the judge.

Can you imagine cops doing that? Hell no. A cop murders someone in cold blood, they get a 2-week paid vacation courtesy of their boss.
