  •  here's a citation; and info on dosage: (12+ / 0-)

    http://www.webmd.com/...

Refers to a study published in the August 2004 issue of the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry.

Apparently the dosage range beyond which there is a significant effect, is about 45 milligrams per day. That dose, distributed across the entirety of one's daily diet, is not sufficient to cause flushing. So the relevant effect must be something other than the flushing itself.

It's also a much smaller dose than the doses Hoffer & Osmond used for treating schizophrenia, which were typically beyond 1,000 milligrams / day.

However, other studies have shown that niacin in doses large enough to cause the flush reaction, also helps clean out cholesterol. Niacin is produced in a timed-release prescription form specifically for this purpose.

So what I'd do (and probably will) is look for niacin tablets at a 50 milligram dosage and take 1/2 or 1 tablet 2x daily (breakfast and dinner). That should produce a mild flushing reaction that correlates with cleaning up cholesterol, and is well above the threshold for being neuroprotective.

    •  45mg is not going to do it for me. (9+ / 0-)

BOTH my parents have Alzheimer's, and my Dad was a brilliant man who now can't remember the word for the thing with the pages.  My Mom doesn't know who I am.

Until I start having a problem,  this is the solution for me.

I have been popping one, two sometimes three 500 mg pills, in the morning and before bed for 2 years now, and strangely, I have had NO side effects or liver issues, and I have been having my physicals and blood tests each year.

A great side effect, is my blood pressure, which was always borderline high, is now completely normal, and facial age spots and under-eye circles seem to have disappeared.

I'm still waiting for Niacin to regrow and darken my hair though. No such luck yet.

I read a intriguing  article about a lady that tried to get her husband in a clinical trial for Alzheimer's disease. They rejected her husband and she was very disappointed, so she read up on what the trial was all about. She discovered that when the brain has this disease, the body has a hard time getting the brain glucose, its main source of fuel. This accelerates the decline.

The trial dealt with supplying the brain an alternative source of fuel. They were feeding the people in the trial caprylic/capric acid 5 times a day. She did her own investigation into what caprylic/capric acid was and found out it comes almost exclusively from coconut oil (palm oil has it also)!

She took it upon herself to feed him extra virgin coconut oil everyday (I think it was about  1 T. at a time) She stirred it in his coffee, added it into his meals, or just gave it to him off the spoon. The man went from severely impaired, not remembering much of anything to, over the course of a year, remembering enough to have a functional life with his wife again. He even began to remember how to write. here, I found the link to the article:

how much is 2 much for a compromised liver?  500 would be to much?

be taken alone to have the best effect?

My B vitamin pill includes 100 mg niacin, as niacinamide, and i do not experience a flush.

But then again, i do get mini hot flashes all the time, so who knows what is happening.

This is very interesting and deserves more testing.
I certainly intend to follow all provided links.

Yeah I know - they turned it into prescription drug.  I take 1000 mg a day to increase good cholesterol and never experienced a flush.
