    believe they are middle class when you are not, if you are living paycheck to paycheck, you are not middle class.  Middle class people used to have savings, bought new houses, a new car every few years, sent their kids to college with no sweat, had pensions on which to retire, could afford to buy all the new things that American minds could invent(TV's refrigerators, toasters, IPads) and took a vacation with their kids each and every year.  Look up what $40,000 is adjusted for inflation and it will make you ill.

      Even people making $250k/year can be in a situation where they are living paycheck to paycheck due to poor financial choices.
