In this case, it just means what someone will pay for the object. Now, gold does have some utility in electronics, due to its great conductivity and low noise, but the amount used is not exactly huge. Sure, it is used to make jewelry, but that is only worth what someone is willing to pay. A lump of gold lying around doing nothing isn't really contributing much.

SHIIIINEEEEY - it has always held value.

some of the most amazing pieces i ever saw were by the scythians (6th - 7th b.c.) - cast in such detail that you needed a magnifying glass to see the detail.

check out these pictures from the hermitage museum.  the collection left russia and came to the metropolitan museum in ny when i lived there.  i still vividly remember the pieces and was struck by how advanced the scythian society was to have made such beautiful and delicate pieces.  totally changed my view of "early" civilizations - made me realize that they were extremely advanced back then - not the stone clubbers wearing animal skins that was portrayed by many "christian" stories.

and in dental fillings. My gold tooth has lasted over 25 years so far. Not exactly applications where supply exceed demand.

      •  gold is inert - that is the value of it in (0+ / 0-)

electronics and medical uses.  it is resistant to almost all chemical influences, yet conducts electricity well.  i knew a horse who had gold points implanted into his feet (pasterns) and had electric therapy several times a year to stay sound.  it worked!

it is called the "noble metals" in the elemental chart...
