    Wait staff spend the day on their feet, work in conditions where they're likely to be injured and still are supposed to be cheery and friendly.

    I sure as hell couldn't do it.

      It is a hard job, and on a busy shift, you have to sort of learn how to plan your movements as you go to be efficient, so that nobody is going unserved. No wasted trips. And it is physically quite tiring.

      I always tip well.

      and most don't have health insurance or paid sick days. That's true of most everyone in the restaurant industry. As servers and other staff get older, the hard physical work takes a toll. One of my former colleagues had to have both knees replaced a few years ago. She's in her 50's, with no health insurance.

      My daughter is 37, and has tendonitis, carpal tunnel, and possibly some permanent nerve damage from years of working in kitchens. I have a rotator cuff problem I can't do anything about from 20 years of restaurant.
