  •  There is a little more nuance than that (23+ / 0-)

But you've hit the main hotpoints.  Not all pro-lifers believe all of the points, but the sincere of them believe one or more of the following.

    1.  Those are really babies being killed.  The numbers add up to be greater than the Holocaust.  Every minute it goes on is horrible.

    2.  Women are supposed to have babies.  Not wanting them is unnatural, so the person wanting the abortion must be either ignorant or crazy.

    3.  God decides who is born, who dies, who gets sick etc.  Messing with that is a form of blasphemy.   This is often combined with huge blind spots about their own health care, but some sects take it to the literal extreme and don't do modern medicine at all.

    4.  The baby might be a BOY.  A 50% chance to save an important male baby is worth any risk to the relatively unimportant female host.

    •  If they truly believed... (11+ / 0-)

...that God decides who is born and who dies then they would see abortion as just another instance of God's decision as the abortion wouldn't happen without God allowing it to happen.  The reality is that they're hypocrites who despite all their proclamations about their belief in God, they truly do not have faith that God is in control of everthing and thus they think it's their place to do God's job for him in preventing women from being able to get abortions.

I think that is the biggest reason that people try to force their religions on other people: they're truly, unadmittedly scared that what they claim to believe isn't real.  Getting others to claim to believe it too is merely an attempt to try to paper over the cracks of doubt in their faith.

      •  That may be true at a subconscious level (4+ / 0-)

But that doesn't change the fact that at the conscious level they believe with passion all kinds of things that may be contradictory and ACT on them.

My wife had a very good childhood friend that was essentially brainwashed by fundies for much of her adult life.   At the height of it her world was so restricted that she didn't feel she was allowed to do much of anything except cook and clean.   They did not lock her up.  Her family and husband weren't part of it.  She did it to herself.  This was especially problematic as she also had a medical condition and it was going untreated during this period.

Thankfully her husband was more sane and eventually got her away from them.   They're still religious, but of the more mainstream, tolerant kind of Christianity.

Do NOT assume that they don't believe what they preach.  Most of them actually do, no matter how bizzare and contradictory it seems to the outside.   Their leaders? Probably not so much but it's hard to tell without getting into their heads.

      •  And pro lifers should know that God (1+ / 0-)

        forgives everything.

They are so big on the truth of every word in the Bible that is filled with war and death and betrayal, yet God forgives it all.

But one woman making a heartwrenching decision for herself that wouldn't be forgiven? Crazy talk.

Let's create a world where all are welcome.

      •  Not so much (0+ / 0-)

Because most religious people, whether they are  pro choice or "pro life" don't believe that murder is just another instance of God's decision. I don't know of many major religion that thinks murder is just "God's will" and therefore we should allow it to happen.
