a little more frequent in various women groups in my county as of late. Especially when a number of large churches throughout the state sponsor unwed mother homes--Help is provided, but the mother has to agree to give up the baby in a private adoption. Texas has some of the most lax private adoption laws in the nation. I kid you not, it's amazingly easy if the would be parents can afford to pay the "fees".  I hate to wade into those waters, but it's a reality. No question about it.

while others make "love offerings" to their local Crisis Pregnancy Center.

Young women who have mistaken some CPC for a pro-choice agency are often put under a lot of pressure to make private adoption arrangements. One told me about the "counselor" at a CPC taking a sheaf of papers with lists of names and addresses out of a desk drawer.

She was told, "Don't even think about having an abortion. You'd be sorry for the rest of your life. And any of these couples would love to adopt your baby and give it a fine Christian home. Just pick a name, any name on this list. I'll call them, and they'll come straight over here to meet you, right now."

      It's a huge racket.

    •  Must have changed recently (3+ / 0-)

Texas used to be so problematic that a lot of kids ended up in orphanages because they grew up before a qualified couple was found. For example, we had friends who had to prove they were members in good standing of a religious congregation.

who adopted children from Texas.  The adoptive father was offering up his son for sex to at least two other men.  I think that he had been allowed to adopt 3 children from the state, two boys and a girl.  He was charged and I think convicted along with the two other men.  Apparently Texas still has problems with adoptions.
