    women as second class citizens in my experience. It's ironic when you consider that women generally make up a larger portion of the congregation. Women are basically propping up the institutions that subjugate us.

      The Society of Friends, created in the 17th century, was equality oriented from the get go: Quakers regarded men and women, old and young, educated and not-educated, rich and poor, priests and not-priests, etc., as equal.

      Over time, there were imperfections in implementing the testimony of equality--originally called brotherhood--but the fundamental principle was there right from the beginning.

      Not surprisingly, a lot of Quakers were imprisoned in those early decades for being Quakers.
