    Are you saying people would know, and therefore he WAS a magistrate, or people would know, and therefore he probably WASN'T a magistrate?

    I agree with everything else you said, but I'm unclear on your initial point.

      His father had introduced himself to people in law enforcement in his new home town - esp. after his son's involvement with police - and ergo the Zimmermans were a known quantity. The father having worked as a magistrate gives him credibility.
