      Since the middle ages, the major purpose of regulation is to protect vested economic interests.  In the guise of protecting people what regulation usually does is to use the power of government to set barriers to new entries into the marketplace and new products.

      No matter how monopolistic a company get's it cannot force you to buy it's product -- unless, of course, they get the government to do it for them.

      Big business is inherently less competitive than small business, but they do have the resources to purchase politicians, which gives them the edge.
