  •  I continue trying to think why this law was passed (1+ / 0-)

The Florida SYG law invites X person(s) to hunt any group of X+1 people, as long as there are no witnesses. It especially encourages a single person to hunt 2 or more people, because the claim that one person felt threatened by a group of people is more credible than the claim by two people that a group of 3 was SYG-worthy, and so on.

For the sake of argument only, if race and/or ethnicity are factors in this kind of SYG killing and law enforcement does nothing, one or more people of the victim(s)' race and/or ethnicity might be encouraged to engage in payback. And thus might begin an escalating cycle of retribution, leading who knows where....?

I have to think some of the people who supported this law did so in the fevered hope that it would start the Race War they have been creaming in their jeans about for so many decades.

A sick thought, but these are some sick cookies. This law was manifestly NOT passed to right an existing legal wrong. One of the most powerful lobbying organizations on the planet wrote this and successfully shopped it to 25 states. There is at least 1 reason for this, and it was most certainly NOT to allow aggrieved citizens to defend themselves. Since when has ALEC given the slightest shit about any citizens but the wealthy?

Then again, maybe this is my occasional penchant for CT.

It's because they started believing their own propaganda.  They really do believe that everyone will be safer if everyone is carrying guns.  That's what the whole tea party revolution is, a bunch of true believers who bought into the lies the GOP have been telling for so long to get elected.

There revolution will not be televised. But it will be blogged, a lot. Probably more so than is necessary.

I was just tossing out the possibility that some of the state-level backers of this law saw its potential to start cause armed feuding. However the goal of this law must principally be concerned with making enormous sums of money: One of the world's most powerful lobbying organizations, representing some of the world's most powerful multinational corporations does NOT care if the little people will be safer carrying guns. What's the angle?

This law completely denies due process or equal protection to the alleged attacker killed by a person who "stands their ground." I still think it is very deliberately crafted to challenge the federal courts to reach down and try to invalidate it so as to guarantee Constitutional protections for the alleged attacker. The battle will go to SCOTUS, where 5 conservative judges will be tempted to tell the federal government that states are entitled to circumvent Constitutional protections in some circumstances, opening a Pandora's box of laws challenging federal protections of individual rights, federal environmental laws and regulations, commerce restrictions, etc., etc., etc.

If ALEC is involved, I have to think they sniff huge $$$$.
