This Joe has a job and still collects disability payments?
    WTF!
Ya know, that reminds me of friends I once had who studiously avoided work all their lives and are collecting SSI, living in subsidized housing, working under the table, receiving (shhhhh) secret inheritances from relatives (who die without any other family), going to school (gratis) and enjoying every minute of bilking the government.  I say 'had' friends, because I really had had enough.  I just couldn't understand how they could all be so crassly irresponsible and selfish, and damn lazy (well lazy as far as actually working for a living, but they are working very hard at not keeping any money trails and grifting Uncle Sam).
Every single one of them is capable of work, but they prefer the life on the dole - it's worked very well for them - they're the epitome of what the GOP is talking about when they talk about welfare queens.
I wish someone would wise up and cut their benefits.

I think, therefore I am........................... Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose AKA Engine Nighthawk - don't even ask!

How the hell is he doing both?  Another welfare check I'd like to see abolished is retirement and health care for elected officials at all levels of government.    Funny how austerity always seems to miss them and their pet govt programs like defense.

This is common anti-government Tea Party slam on elected officials that is is no doubt being pushed by corporate interests. It's a main theme of the mythical Congressional Reform Act of 2011 that was touted in widely circulated by e-maii chain letters and appears on many right-wing web sites.

But think about it. This would make it even more difficult for non-wealthy people to hold office and would increase the temptation of elected officials to take advantage of lobbyist handouts and cushy retirement jobs. This is exactly what we don't want.

It's interesting that this theme is being pushed by right-wingers, but they never mention the fact that members of congress are exempt from insider trading laws. Why? Feeding legislators insider information is a way to exert influence, i.e. buy legislators.

What we really need is a complete ban on corporate contributions to campaigns as well as strict limits personal contributions and "independent" campaign expenditures. In  place of money-driven politics there should be a fair and effective system of public funding so that qualified, but not necessarily wealthy or powerful, people can gain and hold public office.

        •  How many poor people do you know in office? (0+ / 0-)

The system is rigged.   I am not cutting their benefits because they are rich or poor, deserve them or not - I would like to cut them because they're dicks.

I know a couple people that live as you describe. They scam the system in every way possible, get food assistance and rent assistance and free tuition, all the while voting Republican. I know a person that faked a back injury to get out of work for months, so their income would qualify for medicaid, because their spouse needed very expensive medical treatment. This person is a die-hard GOPer, and the spouse that received the expensive medical care via Medicaid is a dedicated Limbaugh listener and despises Obama.
It's all part of the delusional, narcissistic society we live in. When someone else gets assistance, they're lazy freeloaders. When you get assistance, well, you deserve it because you work hard and pay your taxes and you're not a brown person.
The worst thing about America is Americans.
