I highly recommend Gebser to anyone who wants to understand cultural differences and interactions. He lays out 5 conciousness structures (archaic->magic-> mythic->perspectival-> integral); they are layers of a cake. We have all the structures underneath, and our very modern world is predicated upon our ever-present origin. Without magic or myth, our perspectival (modern) structure is inviolate and our mental structure could not support itself. It's a rather lengthy argument using a qualitative approach via artistic artifacts... the only way the past generations can still speak to us, their descendants.

It's nice to get positive feedback on this site; I'm used to insults in any religiously oriented thread. It's the main reason my wife refuses to participate in Dailykos-> it's too toxic for her.

Above Grecian mantles were chiseled these words... Know Thyself... Nothing in Excess... the pop philosophy of its day.
