  •  my oldest niece is graduating this june, (12+ / 0-)

    with a degree in music. she still has to do her student-teaching, so she won't actually be entering the job market until the end of the first semester, of next school year. i asked my brother if she had any idea of employment opportunities, in the chicago area, or had considered just going on for her masters, to kill off another couple of years, before being forced, by finances, to find an actual paying job. as you note, budget cuts are pretty much eliminating programs not considered profitable, so my niece isn't seeing much out there.

    interestingly, i am the only member of my family with a degree (and subsequent certification) in a "real" discipline (accounting/business), but even i recognize the value that the arts add to one's education, and life in general.
