  •  As a former music teacher... (11+ / 0-)

I couldn't agree more. For years, I used to give all of my beginning music students (band, choir, general music) math problems with musical notes. It reinforced the note values and also reinforced their math skills. We called the concept "Teaching Across the Curriculum." Just because it doesn't fall under the umbrella of one's subject matter doesn't mean that the students can't benefit from the reinforcement.

Music teaches so many things - reading, math, science, artistic expression, form, coordination, teamwork, work ethic, self discipline, self worth... The list could go on. Because it teaches all of these things, eliminating music from a child's education makes about as much sense as eliminating math, English, science, art, P.E., and the school counselor.
