    It's much easier to nix something that is perceived as a very individual thing than one that is more of a group/team effort.  It's also hard/impossible to have a high school band for games without an elementary and middle school band program.  And we all know how "valuable" sports are, literally.  Somehow art is seen as something reserved for a few talented people, perhaps even "elitist" and therefore suspect.

    What is lost when the arts or phys ed or social studies are neglected in education is the formation of well-rounded people who are prepared to make a good life for themselves.  People with lots of varying interests are more fun to be around and also are able to find more ways to satisfy/occupy/entertain themselves.  Maybe that's why conservatives are so unhappy.  They are boring, even to themselves.  ;-)

      in my day.

      My older daughter, although she doesn't play an instrument (well, not a band instrument--she plays guitar like Daddy :)), goes to the football games mainly to hang out with her friends in the band :D
