  •  Sociopath and psychopath are (10+ / 0-)

synonyms, with the former now preferred. They both mean someone with no empathy.

A brilliant English psychiatrist whose name I can't recall wrote a book recently saying that "evil" means the absence of empathy, which he says can be clinically measured.

    •  Lack of empathy, pathological lying, manipulative (5+ / 0-)

Those are the 3 main characteristics of a psychopath.

I live in a land of Tea Baggers, the leader of whom is a true psychopath!  I have had close dealings with this psychopath and God help anyone who has to deal closely with a true psychopath.  In fact I'm looking for a new place to live to get away from him and the Tea Baggers.

The unbelievable inability of the Tea Baggers to reason and to accept facts, makes them unbelievably susceptible to the pathological lying and constant manipulation of this psychopath.  And I have an email from this guy where he says he has no emotions.  He will stop at absolutely nothing to get what he wants.

This is what makes Tea Baggers so dangerous to our democracy.  It's not their independent actions (if they have any), it's the ease that they are manipulated by some very, very evil people in our society.

Whenever someone uses the terms psychopath or sociopath lightly, it immediately sets me off  on a rant.

      •  Foxx exhibits all three of those characteristics, (1+ / 0-)

        in spades.

How, then, can you still say that she is not a sociopath or a psychopath?

Last I checked, a psychopath is an emotionally-flat person without a conscience.  Sociopaths are quick to rage and quite emotionally unstable generally.

      •  Incorrect. (0+ / 0-)

If you'll google "sociopath psychopath synonyms" you'll find many, many sources that identify them as synonyms.

I studied a lot of psychology in the 1970s.  At that time the word sociopath was replacing psychopath, because the latter was thought to have too many connotations of violence.  It was a kind of political correctness in the field of psychology.

Don't rely on sources earlier than the 1980s on this issue.

    •  I was under the impression that they are not (0+ / 0-)

Quite the same. From what I have read/heard psychopaths are leaders, who instigate bad behavior, while sociopaths are followers who follow the ones doing bad behavior.

Of course, discerning who is leading and who is following can be tricky.

      Otherwise, they aren't much different.
