  •  when I entered Haverford College in 1963 (7+ / 0-)

tuition was 1,800 a year IIRC.  Even if it were twice that, consider what a student faces today:

    2012-2013 Costs
    Tuition
    $43,310
    Room and Board
    $13,290
    Student Activity Fee
    $392
    Orientation Fee
    $210
    Total:
    $57,202

now granted, full students pay full fare.  There is a lot of financial aid, and while not super wealthy the College has a healthy endowment.

But still,  I cannot imagine having to earn one's tuition (forget room & board) by working.  It just is not possible.

Sure it is:  you just go to a state university whose tuition is somewhere between a fourth and a fifth of what you quoted above.

Haverford College is the 21st most expensive college in the United States.  It is more expensive than Harvard, Princeton or Yale.   It's the Bentley of colleges, and you can't quote the price of a Bentley to argue that people can't afford cars.

Linking to a news article is journalism in the same sense that putting a Big Mac on a paper plate is cooking.
