The power of these telcos now comes from how they play off against each other their two corporately separate divisions, wired and wireless. Wireless has far less regulation, including the retention of all kinds of monopolies. The telcos have pulled their actual business into these wireless corps, while retaining a wired corp for whatever balance of power they provide. Power granted them mostly in exchange for subsidized services like universal rural service, universal 911. Meanwhile the telcos have gotten all kinds of public money that cover those costs (and far more). Now they're engaged in getting out from under the responsibilities while retaining the powers.

Telcos are run by lawyers who "decouple" liabilities from privileges. These people have been violating the 4th Amendment on every single American in phones, email and Web for over a decade, getting only more power instead of bankrupting fines and prison. Of course they've rolled that into unlimited power and profit.

There's a reason the AT&T logo looks like the Death Star.
