$38.78 a month for a basic phone line is not affordable.  No call-waiting, no voicemail, no nothing.....just a straight phone line that gave a busy signal if you were on it when someone called.

    $38.78 a month.

My cable phone is $34 a month with taxes included, and we have voicemail, call waiting and free USA long distance.

I know not everyone has access to cable....a friend of ours in a little subdivision in a more rural area wanted to get cable tv, but Time Warner wanted $450 to dig the trench from the road to her house (about 65 yards) and she doesn't have the money.  We offered to do it for her, but TW STILL wanted the money to hook it up, despite the "free hook up" ads running right now.

We don't pay for cable tv, just phone and internet and our bill is about $60 a month.  I do love getting the AT&T and Dish and Direct TV "coupons" in the mail though.  every time Time Warner wants to jack up our prices, I threaten to dump 'em.  We've been on the "new customers only" price plan for about 8 years now :-)  so, I hope ATT keeps offering up to $300 to switch....I've used it to my advantage for years!
