    diaries in the past week.

This is off topic, related to comments in another diary on Cherokee ancestry; specifically comments on why so many living in N.C., Tennessee, and the Midwest claim Cherokee origin.

Cherokee's are a matriarchal society.  That may explain part of the desire to trace lineage along that line.  Due to extreme prejudice, records of interracial marriages are rare.   The exception being those of Catholic faith.

My relatives have discovered today's DNA typing has limitations.  Early European traders, especially those dealing in fur, were men.  European women migrated to America as wives, or future wives of other Europeans.

Cherokees, according to both oral and language tradition, most likely are decedents of the Iroquois tribe. With origins in the Great Lakes.  You will find much speculation about origins in the Middle East.

Did a French fur trader take a Cherokee woman as his common wife?  They never said, and I'll never know.

...that Cherokee (full-bloods), like other American Indians, originated in Asia. There are a very small number of individuals with anomalous results showing Middle Eastern origin. Most researchers believe these to be admixtures that occurred from intermarrying that there is no family record of.

Don't tell me what you believe, show me what you do and I will tell you what you believe.
