the state to pay extra for child care so the mother could work.  I can see training to improve employability, but to force any unskilled job for the sake of work for works sake???

Never promote men who seek after a state-established religion; it is spiritual tyranny--the worst of despotism. It is turnpiking the way to heaven by human law, in order to establish ministerial gates to collect toll. John Leland

I say we force those lazy do nothing people on welfare to do useful things like building dams and bridges and electrical distribution systems. That'll teach them!

If only there was a historical precedent for a president pushing such initiatives.

Hmmmm.  Give me a minute here.  Yes, I can see it now.  It’s coming into focus.  The children would learn that the world was created in seven calendar days, that you successfully compete or deserve to die, that compassion is a sign of weakness and must be avoided, that charity makes the recipient lazy and cruelty makes one strong, that illness and misfortune are punishments from God for not being greedy enough, that the most important thing in life is to win regardless of the way you win, that stealing and lying are ok as long as you don’t get caught, that the sun revolves around the earth, and that the earth is a flat disk supported by elephants standing on the backs of tortoises, and will be purified in a big war called a ‘rapture’.

That’s a big flaw in the conservative view that has yet to be addressed in full, and with gusto:  so much of what they advocate is for the good of the state, or for some abstract philosophy, but is bad for the PEOPLE.  They are saying that people exist for the state or for a philosophy, rather than the state existing for the people, for the common good of its citizens.  It’s what we said about communism and fascism.

Yes, work for the sake of work is called busywork.  It does nothing for anyone, and sooner or later the worker realizes that his or her work is indeed useless busywork and that his or her time, effort, good will and talent have been squandered on useless tasks.  The result is an insulted—and rightfully so—worker.
