  •  They did this to the USPS BECAUSE of the unions (1+ / 0-)

The postal workers' union is one of the biggest and strongest in the country--the 2006 lame-duck Republican congress pushed this through because Harry Reid had to keep his powder dry.....

    •  I agree that unions were a primary reason, but (1+ / 0-)

it didn't help USPS that it's a successful and beloved government (though separate from government) entity.
I know there's a problem with the dwindling first class mail, but there's an uptick in packages because of on-line shopping, and USPS is the cheapest way to send packages and in many ways the simplest.
As I said, at least FedEx & UPS use the Post Office -- I've had packages sent to me through both private services that when you look at the tracking, one of the stages is through USPS. Really, USPS services are a bargain, and for the most part, very reliable.
And our old lady lab dog loves our mail carrier!

      •  USPS was in the black (0+ / 0-)

before the $5 billion/year retirement requirement was imposed by the lame duck Republican Congress of Dec 2006. USPS was contemplating investing in electric cars, by all accounts....

It's the unions, and the GOP's ongoing attempts to kill them.
