  •  I agree, but would add (20+ / 0-)

that the offender is deemed more valuable than the child. The reputation of the organization is deemed more valuable than the child. It is, quite simply, easier to pretend that it never happened.

    •  Patriarchy (9+ / 0-)

It's because when the religious right talks about "family values," they mean "patriarchy" - defined as "the man rules over his household. Period, end of story." For many, that definition stretches to include "the man is privileged to have sex with whomever he chooses."

It's why prostitutes are prosecuted, but not the johns.  It's why rape is "the woman's fault."  It's why adulterous wives are treated so much worse than adulterous husbands.  It's why female, and ONLY female, sexuality is to be rigidly controlled and regulated at all costs.

And it's why, in some cases, a little child molestation is - well, just to be expected, really.  After all, men are voracious sexual monsters with appetites that can't (and more to the point, shouldn't) be tamed.  If a man has to turn to children to satisfy his urges - well, he's obviously not getting what he needs from his wife, right?

Now, obviously ALL right-wingers are not approving of child molestation, not even to the level of tacitly letting the matter get worse.  But when we try to hold some of these self-styled "patriarchs" accountable for these abuses, a lot of the rightists (correctly) sense we are really out to demolish the whole system of patriarchal privilege.  Which accounts for the whole reflexively-closing-ranks thing.  The institution MUST be preserved even if it leads to "unfortunate" outcomes here and there along the way.

Which leads to a lot of people who SERIOUSLY should know better, ending up endorsing behavior they otherwise wouldn't dream of even tolerating.

      •  for them, female sexuality is a horrible sin (5+ / 0-)

unless you're a pastor getting some with someone else's ten year old daughter.

(The above was probably snark, for the snark challenged) (The below was actually said by George W Bush in a press conference) I'm kind of stalling for time here...They told me what to say. George W Bush, 03-21-2006 10:00 EST Press Conference

"The man is privileged to have sex with whomever he chooses" really does sum it up very succinctly. All the social/societal trappings really do revolve around prettying up, codifying, and justifying that point right there.

I don't have enough fingers to count up the number of religious reich men I've met who are, quite simply, children. Walking ids who cannot and will not be told "no" for indulging any of their whims or passing urges. And everything becomes a power play. A child prioritizing someone else first becomes a rebellion against the patriarch's authority that must be met with force, either verbal or physical. A woman failing to perform the house duties to exacting specifications in the manner to which he orders them is challenging the divine right of the king to determine everything.

...and it's all held together by fear.

How does the Republican Congress sit down with all the butthurt over taxing the wealthy?
