Adult retrospective studies show that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men were sexually abused before the age of 18 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2006).
Sexual abuse is an umbrella term that includes everything from non-contact abuse (i.e. being made to watch pornography) to penetration.

Sexual Assault is rape or attempted rape. Statistics do include attacks on minors- in fact 70% of rape victims are under age 17. Generally speaking though, these are not child abuse cases and are not counted as such.

There is some statistical overlap, since some sexually abused children are victims of rape or attempted rape.

But the point remains that the statistics that were questioned are in fact widely considered to be accurate. 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are victims of sexual abuse before they turn 18.

(this may be graphic, please don't read if you are easily triggered)

If a child is sexually abused-groped, made to perform oral sex, etc. but NOT raped (or rape was not attempted) then they would be counted in the Child Sexual Abuse statistic only.

If that same child WAS the victim of either rape or attempted rape, they would be counted in both the Child Sexual Abuse AND the Sexual Assault statistic.

      Does that make more sense?

      •  No, actually, it doesn't make much more sense. (2+ / 0-)

Does rape only include non-consensual vaginal sex? How is forced oral sex not rape? I suppose I could see that simply touching somebody externally might not count as rape, but I fail to see how anything that counts as rape (or attempted rape) would not also count as child abuse (other than the issue of age-of-consent for 16-18 year olds).

In any case, I am sorry for each of you to whom this has happened, regardless of which statistical bean-counting bucket it may fall into.

Forced oral copulation is considered sexual assault, not rape.

If a child is the victim of rape or attempted rape, they are counted twice- once as a sexual assault victim, once as a child sexual abuse victim.

If a child is not raped, they are counted as a child sexual abuse victim only.

When I say that many sexual assaults are not considered child abuse even if under the age of 18, that's because most rapes are at the hands of peers-usually falling within the 5 year age difference that determines whether an act is sexual assault or child sexual abuse.

Also there is an age cutoff (different in each state) that differentiates between child sexual abuse and sexual assault- so in some states, if a 17 year old is raped (assuming for the sake of argument by a much older person) that might be considered sexual assault but not child sexual abuse. In other states it may be classified as both.

It is a lot of bean counting, but important to understand how they come up with those numbers, since so many people seem to doubt their validity.
