    if they are the attorney of record in a court case. They have to get permission from the court first. It usually is granted, but as this judge said in the transcript, he was glad this attorney didn't wait to ask to be released until right before trial, which would have caused a delay in the case.

    The way lawyers usually handle this is to get a retainer that will compensate them at least partially if the client doesn't pay as agreed. (Funny story: criminal defense lawyers say the three most important things to remember are (1) get your money up front, (2) the client always lies, (3) get your money up front.)
