  •  Not just "young folks" (10+ / 0-)

I'm no longer able to comfort myself with the illusion that I'm young or fresh out of college.  And yet for my wife and I (we both work, me as a librarian, her as a teacher) buying a home AND managing our student loans AND those other things (like, you know, eating and being clothed/shod) is a fairy tale.

We've both got jobs, and (knock wood) aren't expecting layoffs, so I guess we're the lucky ones.  We don't splurge (share a single car, go on maybe one trip per year) but still there's pretty much nothing left at the end of the month to put into savings.  So we are, and probably will remain renters for the conceivable future.

Owning your own home used to be considered a ticket to the middle class.  Now, at least where I live, it's the province of the well-to-do.

In the sea, Biscayne, there prinks
    The young emerald evening star,
Good light for drunkards, poets, widows,
And ladies soon to be married.
