But to be clear, Weisel never said anything critical of Mormonism or Mormons as such other than this specific thing.  He never suggested Romney's religion disqualifies from office, as Barbour implied.  Weisel's comments are entirely within bounds, and he is a living reminder of the importance of respecting minority religions and other things.  Barbour'd just as soon not be reminded of the fact of difference within society, as either his conscience would be pricked or his lack of conscience revealed, for his own civil rights record.

I'm not completely convinced the practice of posthumous baptism reflects ill-will versus gross insensitivity and poor judgment, so I didn't think, contrary to the diarist's efforts, that I have an obligation to speak out against it, though it's not something I would ever do.  That never meant others couldn't in their own way, to satisfy their consciences, and Elie Weisel frankly has earned the right to do whatever the hell he wants.  I'm not so convinced it's fair to ask Romney to answer for the actions of his church, but Weisel wasn't really doing that, and if he were, Romney put himself in that position by running for office.  A bit of unfairness short of outright religious hostility would come with the territory, and Weisel had more important issues on his than Mitt Romney or even anything the church publicly says it supports.  He shouldn't be attacked for it or accused of being a bigot, in other words.

I wonder if on some level, Barbour isn't just dog whistling about all the Jews behind Obama.  I've always thought of Weisel as occupying a plane higher than partisan politics, so even if he is a Democrat, I wouldn't reduce him to a surrogate.  But then, the GOP only ever sees minorities as adverse interest groups, doesn't it?
