  •  Proud to say that over the last year (15+ / 0-)

I've been part of a group of citizens that took steps to keep our community pool open by successfully launching an initiative to create a Municipal Pool District so there would be dedicated operating funds to continue it's operation.

It's been exhilarating coming together with a group of strangers and becoming "family"over the course of the last year.

As of 02/22/2012 in Washington State pharmacists can exercise their "religious freedom" by denying women access to Plan B because the judge thinks there aren't any bigots in this state.

    •  We had two local initiatives like that recently (5+ / 0-)

One to create a dedicated sales tax to fund the county library system - which had gotten to the point that it was getting no general fund money and was running a deficit while open only three short days a week (and packed during those hours), and one to create operating funds for a fabulous pool and recreation facility. Both passed thanks to local volunteers who stepped up, saw a need, created a proposal, and got it done.

Fry, don't be a hero! It's not covered by our health plan!

I became so demoralized and disheartened last August when Congress transformed into a circus sideshow over the debt ceiling.  I kept reminding myself I WAS doing something by working at the community level FOR my community.  It helped keep me sane.
