I've thought of following his advice, but I just don't know where to start. Like, how do I find local civics groups or even know what elected positions might be available and/or that I am qualified for?

has a long list of positions that are elected or appointed (sometimes the same thing). I'd start by hunting through the websites of your city and county government.

Fry, don't be a hero! It's not covered by our health plan!

-that's how I found out about local entry-level elected positions. Its like the farm team for the national party. I complain about the Democratic Party a lot. Now I'm putting up cuz I can't fathom the idea of shutting up! ;)
