  •  Police violence? Goofs threw things and shoved CPD (5+ / 0-)

Police have been incredibly patient, restrained, and professional -- even friendly.   A group of idiots decided to directly challenge the cops and try to shove their way through the police line, and were throwing things at the cops.  Cops did exactly what they're supposed to do in that scenario -- which of course is what the Black Bloc morons wanted.  They don't want to protest, they want a fight with police, and they finally provoked one.  A big apology to the CPD for having to deal with the small groul of idiots in the protest deliberately looking to cause trouble.

    •  i was there were you? (19+ / 0-)

the protesters were kettled and then the police moved in.
everything was peaceful until the riot cops came in by force.

The cops tried to bust my head. Plus afterward they threatened me even when I showed them my police press credentials. do not talk out of your ass. get on the streets instead of sitting by your computer pretending your making a difference.

the video clearly shows cops beating people while they were on the ground. what is the excuse for that?

Clearly you are trolling for the cops.
just look at your pattern of comments when posts show police violence

The CPD didn't initiate anything -- the group of morons deliberately trying to shove their way through the police and throwing things at them caused the police line to push back.  Deliberately looking to fight the police and trying to provoke them doesn't make anyone some kind of romanticized hero of a glorious revolution -- it just makes that person look like a mindless rebel without a cause.  Again, my apologies to the CPD for the small group of self-proclaimed revolutionaries too filled with a sense of self-importance and too little filled with common sense.

        •  Why do you think this violence is OK? (5+ / 0-)

Wake up. this is a police state. My apologies to protestors exercising their 1st amendment rights brutally beaten by a gang of thugs.

Deliberately looking to beat up peaceful protesters doesn't make anyone some kind of romanticized hero or an officer of the law - it make that person look like a mindless thug without any regard for the law at all. I no longer support this gang that calls themselves "police".

I'm tired of the poor being criminalized, I'm tired of peaceful protesters being criminalized. Wake up and look at what's really going on.

Please stop making excuses for the fools who were trying to provoke the police.  There has clearly been a group of a few hundred idiots whose only purpose seems to be to try to fight with the police. These Black Bloc morons are not protestors -- they are idiots and thugs.

            •  Even if I could accept your premise that the (0+ / 0-)

police were provoked, I am still left wondering why they are not trained to better handle the provocation.  After all, these "Black Bloc morons" have been around for quite a while.

This is what the Walker Report said about police behavior in 1968, and it doesn't look like there has been much change:

"During the week of the Democratic National Convention, the Chicago police were the targets of mounting provocation by both word and act. It took the form of obscene epithets, and of rocks, sticks, bathroom tiles and even human feces hurled at police by demonstrators.  Furthermore, the police had been put on edge by widely published threats of attempts to disrupt both the city and the Convention.
”That was the nature of the provocation. The nature of the response was unrestrained and indiscriminate police violence on many occasions, particularly at night."
Because they are trained and paid public employees, they are, and should be, held to a higher standard than civilians, protesting legally or not.

    •  Police across the country: fascist oppression (6+ / 0-)

Look at the top photograph. That is an image out of a fascist police state. All across the country overwhelmingly peaceful--if boisterous--protest is met by militarized police forces engaged in violence, intimidation and outright thuggery.

Those aren't police forces on American streets. Those are armies. It's a disgrace. The whole point is to intimidate people so they will be too fearful to exercise their First amendment rights. When cops are dressed up like that, their aim is not to facilitate free expression while ensuring public safety and order--the only legitimate role for police in a democracy--but rather to crush free expression.

There is ample evidence of this over the past eight months. And it is a pattern of policing that has been repeated time and again over the past decade. It takes an authoritarian to defend it.

Apology to the CPD? You should be ashamed of yourself.

    •  Nonsense (4+ / 0-)

Did you see the video? Are you hallucinating, or do you just have an irrational love for authoritarian violence? It truly disgusts me to see anyone defending this on a so-called "progressive" forum.

    •  Bullshit (0+ / 0-)

The Chicago police who kill at least 3 people a week aren't patient when you kiss their ass, yet apologists like you say they're being patient restrained and professional which btw is verbatim from their own statement that all 4 Chicago affiliates repeated last night.

It's kind of weird that there's no video of anyone throwing things at the Chicago police, don't you think?

      You're not helping.
