  •  I can understand your dilemma, HSBC is one (26+ / 0-)

big bank. Additionally, on the news it was said that there would be a one month overlap for bank customers to resolve account issues. I just wanted to add that I started banking with Dime/Anchor/Lockport/First Niagara in 1966, and really liked the service and the people I worked with over the years.

I'm sorry that there won't be a convenient FN branch for you, because other than than credit unions, the people there were the nicest.  They grew large in my area of NY, but I moved a few years ago and won't be opening a branch in my new county.

When my HELOC is paid off this year I won't be doing any further business with them, I'm going to use a local bank and my credit union for everything from now on.

Now is a great time to move your money to a credit union.

    •  I HATE First Niagara with a passion... (5+ / 0-)

I guess it depends what arm of the company you deal with. They bought my local insurance agency and were utterly impossible to deal with, and I have never done a penny of business with them, in any of their capacities, since.

All of my retail and small-business banking is, and will remain, with a local credit union, which I love. My insurance business went to a local agent who's been very good.

Intended to be a factual statement.

too. I think consumer banking, commercial banking, investment banking and insurance should again be split apart.   I won't bundle my  phone/internet/tv again , ever!  This kind of business is bad for consumers. I'm even suspicious of "inclusive" vacation packages and resorts.

I moved almost all my funds, meager though they be, to a local credit union almost a year ago, after having been with USBank (and all the names they've used since they were First National, decades ago) for over forty years, I'm very happy to take my money out of a BigBank and support a local institution.
