    back in Medieval times, when I was a kid, corporations were looking to the long-run: how to make profits, yes, but also to grow over time.

    Since about 1981, they have only been looking at how much equity they can squeak out of the market for the next quarter.

    This is not a winning strategy.  This is a Bain strategy: take all the equity you can get and leave the carcass to die an ignominious death, while YOU laugh your way to the bank with millions of dollars in pensions etc.
