  •  The best clothes are at thrift stores. (7+ / 0-)

Way cheaper than discount store new stuff, and the best quality. People who can afford department store clothing get rid of their stuff before they wear it out. Classic styles always available, sometimes also latest fashions.

The only things I buy new are underwear, hosiery, and shoes.

    •  I got this same daughter a cashmere jacket for (4+ / 0-)

$5 from the thrift store -- gorgeous color and in perfect condition.
Occasionally she finds beautiful designer stuff, but more often it's her way of putting things together that makes her look beautiful and interesting (which she is). She'll buy a dress for $3, and cut the skirt part asymmetrically or use a scarf as a belt with a dress turned into a top. The things my SIL thinks are designer clothes that my daughter is wearing are actually combinations of different things that work well together. Her whole wardrobe probably cost less than a couple of items in my SIL's closet.
I don't know where she got this skill -- I certainly don't have it!
