  •  For boy children it's estimated to be 1:5 (11+ / 0-)

For girls it's 1:4. For women it is estimated 1:3 will be sexually assaulted at least once in their lifetime (an aggregate of the women's childhood and adulthood assaults).

    Not rare at all.

    •  My mother was abused (16+ / 0-)

My mother remarried at 55. She had a wonderful marriage to my father who died only a year earlier. Al came along during a very vulnerable time and became her second husband.

The abuse was so evident my aunts and cousins thought of kidnapping her and much of it seemed sexually focused. He set out to isolate her from friends and family. When she tried to talk on the phone he would "play with her" and used overt sexual behavior to embarrass and control her. There was a photo of him holding her breast that he delighted in showing around.

She had chronic depression and was over-medicated with the help of his nurse daughter. She died with vague medical issues but also with dementia from long term untreated depression which was shared with me by a hospital social worker since Al denied me permission to call her or "interfere" in her care.

This is an incidence of elder abuse - I lived 600 miles away and she always denied it. "He is so good to me!"

Thank you for your wonderful diary.
