As pointed out above NYT had a few reports on it and NPR's Fresh Air had both of them on.
Listen, but just a warning it gets pretty gruesome at times

      •  If you listen to the report they talk about (0+ / 0-)

how the entire equine industry is rife with this type of behavior. That its not just limited to horse racing but that drug use to mask symptoms is so pervasive and cruel.

I echo others however, that it stands a chance Ann might have never known about it. The handlers might have been the only ones involved in the drugging.

if you read the rest of the information you will see that the drug rules were so strict that this horse couldn't be kept sound enough for competition without being disqualified by testing positive for drugs in its system

among the wealthy that I am referring too.

So yes, in this instance rules worked. A lot of times they don't and are ignore.

However, this abusive behavior is very often limited to vets and the handles. Often owners have no clue. Horses being nothing more than investments. Like purchasing real estate, they use them to make money.

    •  Please - Horse racing isn't terribly cruel, there (0+ / 0-)

are very few people that abuse horses in horse racing, either by illegal drugging or abuse.  They are disgusting, and need to be run out of the sport.  But they are NOT common.  They are as common as dog owners who are cruel to their pets.

The NYT articles were exaggerated for effect.  It's true, but it's not common or usual.   NYT does that type of series nearly every Triple Crown season.  Joe Drape goes crazy.
