the results hidden from the purchaser, by the vet she hired to do the pre-purchase.

When you buy a horse, it's buyer-beware, 100% of the time.  And NO horse has "no problems" if it's been in work for a while.  They all have aches and pains and little things on x-ray or ultrasound. That's normal.  The point is, are the problems the horse has, limiting to why you are purchasing him, or not?  Can he be used for his intended use, nor not?

You can't use a horse with serious ringbone as a dressage horse.  He's a pasture ornament.  In fact, the Romney's didn't show this horse for sometime before they sold him.

But this is an outright attempt to dump a known lame horse, with a problem so serious he cannot be used for his purpose, on an unsuspecting buyer.

    •  actually, about serious ringbone, you are (21+ / 0-)

totally correct. for less serious ringbone, it depends on where the ringbone forms and if it has calcified.  sani has/had ringbone that was in an area that didn't impact his movement.  when he came up sore, i stopped working him until the ringbone calcified - he is now fully capable of doing everything he likes to do - run, jump play, dressage.

the vet also can speed the calcification by injecting an alcohol based solution - this will alleviate the pain the horse feels during the outburst.  fortunately for sani, his is on the side of his hoof and it calcified on his own and he is completely sound now.

at my barn, there is a beautiful andalusian who, as a youngster, was found to have no cartilage between the bones in his front feet.  he is retired, gets hand walked, carrots, lots of love and his owner doesn't ride any longer.  it never occurred to her to sell him or put him down as long as he isn't in pain.

i bought a young horse with deformed navicular bones (concave instead of convex) - and as long as he was trimmed at 4 1/2 wks and not a day longer - AND his feet were kept upright, he stayed sound.  i found him a home with two young girls who followed those rules and he stayed sound his whole life - enjoying a life of showing western and living in a pasture with his older buddy.

there is always a way to find a good purpose for a horse who cannot do one aspect - even if it is just to be a companion horse to another one!

eberling and romney are disgustingly unethical.  maybe this horse wouldn't let them get that $77k loss deduction.

      ugh!

      •  Maybe selling this horse put a year in the profit (4+ / 0-)

column, so Mitt could keep the "working farm" deduction and not lose it to hobby farm fun horse classification by IRS.

As a man who loves horses, I appreciate your providing an example of how decent people behave. This little story is heartwarming:

I bought a young horse with deformed navicular bones (concave instead of convex) - and as long as he was trimmed at 4 1/2 wks and not a day longer - AND his feet were kept upright, he stayed sound.  i found him a home with two young girls who followed those rules and he stayed sound his whole life - enjoying a life of showing western and living in a pasture with his older buddy.
You lean in the direction of the "horse whisperer" side.  The Romneys lean more toward the glue factory side.
