  •  Great Galloping Cattails! (12+ / 0-)

Great diary, today, Melanie.  This biology grad was captivated.  I'm going to send a link to my Mother-in-law.  She's sucessfully seeded a small patch of cattails in her pasture pond by collecting fluff from other ponds and scattering the fluff around hers.

Mother-in-law (according to family history told by her children) went through a phase where she experimented with gathering and cooking foods from nature.  I can't remember what the dish was, but her children tell the tale of eating some sort of "cattail-loaf" or whatever and they still shudder from the memory LOL.  As usual, I would have LOVED to have been her child and her children would've gladly traded places with me and had the poptarts and sugary cereals my mom used to buy for breakfast!

I can't give any firsthand account of any cattail dishes, because mother-in-law hasn't ever fixed any since I've been around.  I just have the reviews of her children, who were all fussy teenagers at the time and not to be trusted as teenagers often dislike ANYTHING their parents find interesting.  :^)

I don't think cattails are as invasive out here in Oregon.  They seem to mind their manners and not take over a spot.  Now, don't get me started on blackberry bushes...
