  •  Just said these exact words to friends visiting (13+ / 0-)

our mountain home.  I'm alarmed and everyone should be and one friend said that would cause people to just give up and do nothing to stop it.  She said people need to be told what to do, like recycle, buy a Prius and don't eat meat and stop having babies (that's my suggestion) and then people will take action.  I'm praying for a scientific solution, like the idea of microbes designed by humans to consume fossil fuel pollution.  Luckily, I'm old and never had children, so hopefully I'll be dead before the real hardcore shit hits the fan.  Damn.

      •  It's hard to get anything going when.... (11+ / 0-)

.... one of the two major political parties is running on two basic principles:

        1) Deny anything is happening.

        2) Derail any attempt to do anything about it.

I'm thinking of things like the surrealistic Republican effort to forbid the military to invest in greener fuel development.

But I'm also convinced there is a method to their madness.

I suspect the tipping point as far as public awareness is concerned will be some enormous slaughter in the Third World, like half of Bangladesh floating face down in the Bay of Bengal. Energetic measures will then get underway in the US. However, since everything has been left to the very last minute, these measures will be planned and funded on an emergency basis (cost plus) and carried out by.... oh, I won't mention names, but for the checks, remember there are two "L" in Halliburton. The measures will also require a semi-militarization of society, again with the emergency cited in justification. Guess who will end up leading all this.

I think "they" are not nervous about global warming because "they" can easily conceive of a scenario like the above, which would leave them richer and more in control as a result of the disaster they caused. Conservatives love misery.
