  •  I'm alarmed (15+ / 0-)

I live in Columbus, and I can remember building igloos with my father every winter when I was young.  I'm only 33.  Think about how much the climate has changed in 33 years, which is far less than a fraction of an eye blink of geologic time (plant hardiness charts show the scary change).

As climate change gets worse, we'll have more catastrophic storms, like the 6/29 derecho that knocked out 45% of AEP's customers.  That was a natural disaster and it was bad.  In fact, I still have friends who don't have power restored.

As for coping, well I want to get solar panels, but probably can't because I live in a condo that's on the National Register of Historic Places.  My only other option is to get a standby generator, because we all know utilities won't bury power lines because of the adverse effect on profit margins.  Unfortunately, there are too many who can't afford this kind of contingency.

Don't even talk to me about having kids.  We won't be leaving them much of anything but heartache and despair.

    In summary, we're screwed.

in CA, an old public market restored to include cohousing condominiums.

Our secret sauce? We placed the panels so they weren't visible to anyone on the street, with the blessing of local historic-preservation folks.

Oh yeah, it also helped that as a community we wanted to take care of each other and not hit anyone with a special assessment that they couldn't afford. So we found an installer that would assemble a bunch of high-passive-income investors and leverage the tax credits and pay for installation with what we'd otherwise be spending on electricity (this was a decade ago, before this option was common). Zero upfront and zero maintenance for the first 15 years made it a really easy decision.
