  •  My father is none of those things. (11+ / 0-)

But he's been a Republican all his life. He believes in the things the party used to stand for--a small, effective government that stays out of our lives as much as possible. It is a large part of his personal identity, and to acknowledge what the GOP has become would require that he admit that he didn't see the change as it was happening. Of course, Fox News brainwashing is mostly to blame for that, but it would be a huge crushing blow to him to admit so. This is not a healthy relationship, no doubt, but it is far more complicated than bigotry, stupidity, or greed.

that you are defending your father. It's good to love your father.

    •  out of respect to your father (0+ / 0-)

I would add 'naive' as a constant trait among regular GOP voters. He might not be a bigot or stupid or greedy, but he is naive if he believes corporations will solve all (or most) of our problems. In fact, not only are they often making them worse, they handicap our efforts to solve the problem. Look at the Koch Bros actively telling state leaders not to encourage or promote alternative energies beside oil.
