  •  People just can't admit they've been duped, so... (6+ / 0-)

they double down on their commitment to the bogus Republican 'principles' and blame poor & brown people even more angrily.

My dad is a classic example. He was active in county Republican government in the 1970s and 1980s, back when there was still some lingering shred of integrity. But late in his career the Republican 'machine' in his county became ever more corrupt and feckless, and he found himself working with morons & naked corruption. A sane person might step back and realize he was working with the devil.

Instead, he doubled down on his anger at "the 60's", and wallowed in his rage at affirmative action. It was all those women and minorities who caused things to go bad. See, he was an attorney for the County, and was enraged when female and minority attorneys were hired before "deserving white guys with wives and children" like him. Despite the obvious truth that incompetent and corrupt white guy Republicans screwed the pooch, he can't admit that. He still angrily blames "those affirmative action gals", and watches Fox News 24/7 in his retirement.

When I point out that corporate pirates and privatization have robbed the county blind on his watch, he retreats to the bogus notion that "private industry will always overmatch some government bureaucrat in negotiations". Which is a sad artifact of his service in government at a time when corrupt Republican officials put a thumb on the scale to throw every decision to private contractors.

I'm sure your dad was bright enough in other ways, but what you describe seems to fall squarely under "stupid".   Doubling down on stupid so you don't have to admit you were wrong before ... can hardly be described as insightful.

Because that's what it is: abject refusal to look hard into the mirror and see what you've been a part of. And blaming traditionally powerless and abused minorities for the grotesque failures of your own ruling class.
